About Us

Mukuru Primary School is situated in Mukuru Kayaba slum. The school began in 1985 as a non-formal school with about 200 students and four teachers assisted by volunteers. In the early 1980s Sr. Mary Killeen used to meet on her way to and from Our Lady of Mercy primary school south B many children from the nearby Mukuru slums, who were out of school or had never been to school because of their inability to pay the different school levies of those cost-sharing days.
Sr. Mary went fulltime to Mukuru in 1990 and immediately set up Mukuru Kayaaba primary school. The school has three streams per class except for class one and eight which have two and four streams respectively. A new permanent school has been constructed by the German Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Kenya. It was occupied for the -first time at the beginning of the third term in 2010.
